Marla Wentworth loved animals, and she loved children -- and they loved her.
She raised chickens and ducks at her home in Red Cloud, and the two little girls who lived across the alley were drawn to this woman with the big heart and backyard birds.
Her brother, Garth Wentworth, tells this story the day after she was killed in a fiery crash between her school bus and a tractor-trailer.
"My sister was very crafty and enjoyed building things," he said, his voice starting to crack. "So she built the girls a bench, so they could sit there and watch the chickens and ducks. Little kids really liked her."
Marla Wentworth turned 59 last month, and she had lived most of her life in the tight-knit stretch of Republican River Valley that includes Webster and Franklin counties. She was born in the hospital in Red Cloud and raised in Franklin, graduating from high school there in 1971.
She was a mother of two -- Josh and Monica -- and a grandmother of three girls.
She enjoyed gardening, said her aunt, Gaylene Wentworth, and she loved caring for her birds.
Just like she had cared for her clients when she worked in home health care.
"She was loved by all of her patients," her aunt said.
Marla Wentworth held a pair of jobs more recently, one working part time at the Village Pharmacy in Red Cloud and the other behind the wheel of her bus, taking kids to and from Blue Hill Community Schools.
On Wednesday, she was driving a route she knew well, her brother said.
"That's the thing about Marla, she had a big heart and she loved kids, and the kids on the bus meant the world to her."
Garth Wentworth heard the news from their mother, who heard from the bus company: There had been an accident.
He drove to the rural intersection near Blue Hill.
"It appeared the truck was totally consumed by the fire, and the bus was pretty much a hollow shell."
Leland Wentworth remembers seeing his cousin at family functions -- funerals, weddings and other gatherings. She was older than him, but she was easy to talk to.
"She was a very kind and caring person. She cared a lot about kids and family. She was a very good spirit."
