Parade of Heroes

Pressed in after a whole day of golf, softball, sand volleyball, bingo and barbecue but before the fireworks display was the annual Blue Hill 4th of July Festival Parade. Grand Marshalls for the parade were Russ and Wilma Willems. Russ was unable to attend the parade due to poor health but the prayers of his entire family and his entire community were with him. The Grand Marshall's car was followed by member's of the Willems Family Walking Tall for grandma and grandpa Willems on stilts. The theme for the 2009 Parade was Heroes in America. Heroes celebrated included, Russ & Wilma Willems, Jason Kort, astronaut Clayton Anderson, State Legislator Tom Carlson, our Armed Forces, the American farmer, FFA members, native Americans, cowboys, firemen, policemen, EMTs, baseball players, football players, boy/cub scouts, American Legion members, veterans, teachers and many, many more. In all, about 40 entries made their way down Gage Street for the community to admire. Blue Hill Today put their own float into the parade. This was the first promotion of the blog since it launched just two weeks prior. Wilson Alber and mighty dog Classy drove the float while Rose, Haley, Austin and Tristan Kelley and Zach Moore handed out water bottles and business cards to parade viewers. The Blue Hill Today float honored our heroes who have served in the armed forces ... past, present and future. The Blue Hill Class of 1979 won the prize for Best Theme with their Red, White and Blue Hill float honoring teachers. Riding on the float were former Blue Hill educators, Vaden Lane, Bob Long, Duane Lienemann, Larry Gianokas and Myrtis Alber. They were accompanied by several members of the Class of 1979 including Hilarie Alber Haack, Debbie Frahm, Pam Harrifeld, Rick Kearney, Bruce Heidelk, Starlet Premer Klut, Jeri Gingrich Fry and more. The winning float was designed primarily by Jeri Gingrich Fry. The Blue Hill Webster County Ambulance received first place for the commercial division. The Ambulance was driven by EMT, Lee Ostdiek. The Webster County Sheriff's Department took second place in this division. The American Legion took first place in the adult division. Local WWII veterans who had participated in the Heartland Honor Flight Program road on the float driven by Bob Meents.
