Weather and Crops

For the week ending November 1, 2009, another week of wet weather continued to stall harvest, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field office. Corn harvest lags average by four weeks and is the latest harvest since 1967. Soybean harvest was more than two thirds complete, but now over two weeks behind and the latest harvest since 1984. The USDA says the state's corn crop going into this week rated 80 percent in good or excellent condition, above lat year's 77 percent good or excellent rating. Snow occurred at midweek in Panhandle counties and spread into the western half of the state on Friday. Accumulations of a foot or more of snow accompanied by high winds were reported in a number of counties. In Webster County harvest is pretty much at a complete stand still for most of the week due to the rains received. A few combines were headed out on Sunday but not much harvested due to mud and continuing high moisture. Some cattle got moved to the stalks. Yields are all over the board and some moldy corn starting to show up.
