Marvin L. Armstrong of Lincoln, Nebraska, died Saturday, June 29, 2013, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Graveside services are Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at the Blue Hill Cemetery with Rev. Don McMillan officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Merten-Butler Mortuary in Blue Hill, Nebraska.
Marvin L. Armstrong, of Lincoln, passed away June 29, 2013.
He was born in Blue Hill on Oct. 24, 1921, son of John and Margaret (Blum) Armstrong. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942, serving as lead bombardier in the 452nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, in England during World War II. Two of his missions occurred on June 6, 1944, in support of the D-Day invasion. He flew 30 missions, 27 as lead bombardier and earned several military honors including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. He was honorably discharged from the military in 1945 with the rank of captain.
He married Mary Inez Martin on Nov. 28, 1943. Marvin graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1949.
He taught English and journalism at Kearney High School before joining the FBI as a special agent in 1951. He served in the Dallas, San Antonio, Washington, D.C., El Paso, and Indianapolis (Fort Wayne) field offices until his retirement in 1977. After retiring he worked as a private investigator.
He was a devoted husband and family man who enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Mary; three children, Jill (Jan) Swank, of Rapid City, S.D., Gail (Mike) Winkler, of Slidell, La., and Drew (Shirai), of North Platte; six grandchildren, Tyler Swank, Daniel and Lauren Winkler and Holden (Shawnee), Spencer and Andrew Armstrong; his sister, Lavona Borwege, of Red Cloud; his brothers, Lyle (Ann) Armstrong, of Folsom, Calif., and Charles Stowers, of Hastings; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, John, Burdette and Patrick (infant).
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the FBI Agents Association Memorial College Fund, which provides scholarships to children and spouses of deceased FBI agents
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 3, at Merten Butler Mortuary in Blue Hill, followed by a graveside service at Blue Hill Cemetery.
