Michaela Schlesinger, a junior at Blue Hill high school, has won first place in the Nebraska District 3 Congressional Art Competition. As a result she will receive two tickets to Washington D.C for the award ceremony. Her artwork will hang in the Nation's Capital building in Washington D.C. for the next year.
Michaela's award winning submission is pictured here. She made the paper and typed the articles. She then stained the paper. The images are created in charcoal. She titled her piece " Comfort in Chaos - A Tribute to Haiti. "
Morgan Ockinga, a senior at Blue Hill, won 2nd place. Her artwork will hang in Congressman Adrian Smith's office in the Nation's Capital in Washington D.C. Her piece called "Union of Souls" is oil painting and brown paper towels.
Cheyanne Griffis, a senior at Blue Hill, is 4th place winner and her art will be displayed in Congressman Smith's Scottsbluff office here in Nebraska...Her piece of art was made of stained tissue paper and mono prints. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THREE!!!!

This competition is open to all high school art students in Nebraska’s third congressional district. Each congressional district selects it's own winners.
The winner in each congressional district has the privilege of having their art work on display in the Nation’s capital and receives two round trip tickets to Washington D.C. to participate in recognition there.
Art works entered in the contest were to be two dimensional up to 28 inches by 28 inches (including the frame) and may be up to 4 inches in depth. The art work may be:
Paintings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
Drawings - including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
Collage
Prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
Mixed Media
Computer Generated Art
Photography
All entries must be an original in concept, design and execution.
The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
Last year, 2010, the competition was won by Blue Hill art student Kassie Starkey. Her art work entitled "Alone in Thought" was displayed at the capital building for a year. It will be replaced this year by Michaela Schlesinger's 2011 submission. Last years lst alternate was Danielle Wallace of Blue Hill with her piece called "portrait in a cassette tape".
This competition is sponsored by Members of the U. S. House of representative and facilitated by the Nebraska Art Teachers Association.
Winners will also be recognized at the Nebraska Youth Art Month Celebration, State Capitol Rotunda, March 12, 2011 at 2:00 PM.
