NELSON — The local community is rallying around three Lawrence-Nelson students who are on the mend after a single-vehicle rollover accident near here on April 28.
Ryan Kile, 15; Jordan Cox, 16; and Shane Ostdiek, 16, all of Lawrence and members of the L-N golf team, were traveling to Nelson in a 2000 Ford Explorer driven by Ostdiek. The rollover was reported at 1:27 p.m., seven miles west of Nelson on the Mount Clare Road.

Kile and Cox were ejected from the vehicle. Kile suffered a fractured vertebra in his back.
Cox was slated to have his fractured ankles set Monday after the Explorer landed with the driver’s side down, pinning his legs beneath it. He also sustained a fractured collarbone.

“I know they both have had surgical proceedings,” L-N Principal Frank Jesse said Thursday afternoon. “They’re both out and recovering and doing well as far as recovery.”

The three were driving to Nelson, late to meet up with their team to go to the Harvard Invite golf meet at the Elks golf course near Hastings. L-N golf coach Jim Spirk told the Tribune last week Ostdiek sustained just cuts, bumps and bruises.

Three members of the Lawrence-Nelson High School golf team were injured Thursday in a one-vehicle rollover accident west of Nelson, according to Nuckolls County Sheriff Jim Marr.

Injured were the driver, Shane Ostdiek, 16, and his two passengers, Ryan Kile, 15, and Jordan Cox, 16, all of Lawrence. The young men were traveling from Lawrence to Nelson to meet up with the remainder of the team and depart for a golf meet against Harvard at the Elk's golf course east of Hastings.
All three were transported by ambulance to Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior. Kile was then transported by helicopter to BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln. Marr said Kyle suffered a fractured vertebra in his back and by now has undergone extensive surgery to attempt to repair the damage.
Ostdiek reportedly suffered the least severe injuries of the three, sustaining cuts, bumps and bruises. Cox reportedly suffered two broken ankles and a fractured collarbone. Kile and Cox were both ejected from the vehicle, a 2000 Ford Explorer. The accident was reported at 1:27 p.m.. The location was seven miles west of Nelson on County Road 3000 (the Mt. Clare road).
Ostdiek was eastbound on the gravel road when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and it entered the ditch. The driver of an oncoming vehicle reportedly witnessed the accident and pulled over to avoid a collision.
The Nelson Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad responded, along with the Nuckolls County Sheriff's Department. Marr said several farmers with tractors also helped at the scene.
