Community Club Membership Drive

Reprinted from the Blue Hill Community Club Membership Letter Dear Community Member, Fifty years ago, the Blue Hill Commerce Club was known as a Service Club and the Members were merchants, but the club represented the entire community. In the interim several service clubs were formed such as the Lion's and the JC's, but the Commerce Club remained. There are many smaller groups that are valuable to the community, such as the men's and women's groups within our churches, Legion & Auxilary, PEO, extension and farmers groups. During the past 50 years, the number of retail businesses in Blue Hill has diminished and many that remain are no longer owned by residents of Blue Hill. Other members of the community have stepped in and kept the club viable. It became clear that the name Blue Hill Community Club truly reflects the type of membership that it has now. The members include residents within the city limits and outside the city limits besides the merchants. All of us wether we live in or outside of Blue Hill are invited to join this service organization in order to help fulfill our common social needs. The Blue Hill Community Club is in the process of reorganizing the Club. Over the past 50 years our life style has changed. We live a faster pace of life and we realize in a majority of the families both the husband and wife have jobs away from the home. We are seeking suggestions from individuals and businesses that desire for the Blue Hill community to continue to grow and thrive in this fast changing world we live in. As you know, Blue Hill and the surrounding rural community has more going for it than many communities our size. The Blue Hill Community Club needs your help to ensure that this positive growth continues. The Blue Hill Community Club is a non-profit organization consisting of various community members who who work towards enhancing this great community. Some of the familiar projects the Community Club organizes and sponsors includes these annual events: Easter Egg Hunt, 4th of July Celebration, Community Church Service, Fall Festival, Holiday Bazaar, Santa Clause Visit, Yard of the Month, Christmas Lighting Contest, etc. We are adding some new projects to this list this year. In order for our club to continue thriving, we desperately need volunteers to organize or serve on the above projects/committees. We are enclosing a Volunteer Worksheet with a listing of the events we need help with. In order to accomplish our goals we need you as a member. We are asking that you please consider helping your Community Club with your membership and manpower. We are enclosing a Membership and Volunteer Worksheet. Like we said, we realize a lot of you are limited with time, but any small amount of time or volunteer work would benefit the Community Club greatly. The membership fee is $25.00 per individual/couple per year. Please fill out and return the enclosed volunteer and membership worksheet with your membership dues by February 15, 2010. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, February 16th @ noon @ the City Building Conference Room. Should you have any questions regarding the Community CLub, please feel free to contact any one of the officers. We look forward to having you as a member. I believe the community should hold a community wide "Open House" the same day that we hold our community wide garage sale. All house for sale would be available for viewing as would all businesses and community facilities like the fitness center, golf club house, community senior center, school, pool, parks, stores, GTMC and more. Many out of towners come treasurer hunting on garage sale day. It would be great to show off all that we have to offer. I am sure realtors would help advertise a well organized event.

Meetings held @ noon in Blue Hill excludes those who work outside of Blue Hill from attending. So by becoming members they would only donate dues and maybe time. They would not be involved in any of the decision making processes? Is that correct?

One of the things that is done in my town here in Missouri is that during 2 consecutive weekend, we offer a community 'dumping station' where citizens are encouraged to bring items that litter their yards, hazardous materials such as empty paint cans, batteries, tires, and other 'none landfill' items. all free of charge. For example on the first Saturday of the first weekend old appliances are brought to the city hall parking lot and placed on a trailer and hauled away. On sunday, other items such as those that are found commonly littering yards, are brought and thrown into 1 of several roll-off dumpsters. The 2nd Saturday, we reserve for items such as old lawn mowers, etc. Finally on the last day, several roll-off dumpsters are designated for green-waste such as leaves, tree branches, logs, untreated lumber, and grass clippings. Except for the green containers, all dumpsters are taken away nightly so illegal dumping does not occur. The city officials stand-by the dumpsters each day to ensure they are being utilized properly. This has lead to a revival of some yards in town. It is a slower process on some properties, but this gives those that don't have the means to have these types of things dumped. They usually have a BBQ on each of the Saturdays to encourage more people to participate. It is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your townspeople and creates a sense of pride and accomplishment. We verify all residents by requiring them to bring with them their city utility bill each time they dump items.
