Proclaims March "Nebraska Wellness Month" (Lincoln, Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman today encouraged companies throughout the state to apply for the Governor’s Wellness Award. Companies and organizations with employee wellness programs are invited to apply. Additionally, in an ongoing effort to raise awareness and participation in healthy living, Gov. Heineman has proclaimed March as Wellness Month in Nebraska. Throughout the month, the Governor is asking employers to promote workplace wellness.
“We are working hard to create a culture of wellness in Nebraska and to improve our health and quality of life,” Gov. Dave Heineman said. “I’m proud of our citizens who have made the commitment to embrace a healthier lifestyle and I encourage all businesses in Nebraska to offer wellness and health programs for their employees.”
Dr. Joann Schaefer, the state’s Chief Medical Officer and Director of Public Health for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, said, “We know wellness works and Nebraskans are leading healthier lives thanks to efforts at home, in schools, workplaces and communities. That is the cornerstone to achieving better health in Nebraska.”
Since the awards program began in 2008, there have been 107 businesses honored with the Governor’s Wellness Award. This award recognizes employers who promote workplace wellness and show a serious commitment to employee health and well-being. Prevention and wellness efforts in the workplace can produce higher productivity, better employee satisfaction and help control health care costs.
The Governor’s Wellness Award is divided into two categories. The Sower’s Award is intended to recognize organizations that have developed quality wellness programs. The Grower’s Award honors the accomplishments of businesses and organizations demonstrating significant improvement in employee health behaviors.
