Sara Alber competes Down Under

When Sara Alber received an invitation to attend the Down Under International Games Tri-nations meet at Griffith University, Gold Coast Compus, Southport, Australia during her sophomore year in High school she was excited about the oppertunity but was unable to attend. (Southport is near Brisbane.) But she knew if she were able to attend the invitation would be available the next year, the summer before her senior year. So after a year of planning and saving up for the occassion the Blue Hill senior traveled to Australia with other American Athletes for a 10 day trip that included some R&R in Waikiki, Hawaii as well as the two day meet held July 2-4. Down Under Sports is sponsored by a group called International Sports Specialists Inc. The games provides a forum for athletes to compete head to head in the sport they love. Between 2000 and 3000 athletes compete annually in the Down Under games. Sara is the daughter of David and Tammy Alber of rural Guide Rock. Teams from the United States, Australia and New Zealand are invited to the event each year.At the meet Alber competed in javelin, discus and shot put. She earned a bronze medal in the shot put. Alber's third place finish in the shot put was behind Lindsey Aponte of New York and Ashley Webb of Illinois was a throw of 10.55m. (34.61 feet) She placed 7th in her age group in the discus with a throw of 26.54m Alber has had a very successful high school career in shot put. She set a new school record with 39 feet 10.5 inches and has placed first in both the district tournament and in the Twin Valley Conference tournament. She has also competed in the State track meet every year of her high school career. Alber's love for sports includes soft ball as well as track events. She has one more year of high school in Blue Hill to enjoy these sports. She has not decided how sports will affect her future. She hopes to have a career in an agricultural related field as she loves animals and farm life.
