Washington Report: Show Your Appreciation for Veterans

Fighting ceased during World War I on November 11, 1918.  The following year, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day to remember those who had fought and died during the war, and in appreciation of their sacrifice.  In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower designated the date as Veterans Day to honor all veterans.  Since then, we have taken time every year to honor our veterans.
In Nebraska, we take great pride in service to our nation and our commitment to veterans is second to none.  Our state is home to more than 150,000 veterans and we are grateful for their contributions to our nation’s security and freedom.
I recently met with a group of Korean War Veterans from Nebraska visiting Washington, D.C. as part of an Honor Flight to see the national memorials built in appreciation of their service.  More than a normal tourist visit to our nation’s capital, the meaning behind this journey was very powerful.  It was a blessing to be among these veterans as they experienced their memorial – many of them for the first time.
It was also a privilege to see the family members and many volunteers who accompanied the veterans to Washington.  The contributions of both the volunteers and the private donors who financed the trip made the Honor Flight possible.  Their generosity and patriotism is a true reflection of the pride and respect Nebraskans hold for our veterans.
There are many ways to show your support for those who have served our country this Veterans Day.  There will be ceremonies and parades across the country.  There are also numerous volunteer opportunities and organizations working year-round to help veterans and those currently serving in the military.
Another way to show your appreciation to our active duty forces is to participate in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program.  Every year, the American Red Cross delivers Christmas and holiday cards to American military personnel, veterans, and their families across the country and around the world.  This tradition is a wonderful opportunity for families, schools, and other groups to show their support for our troops.  Once again, my district offices in Scottsbluff and Grand Island will serve as collection points for constituents to drop off cards until Monday, December 2, 2013.

Each Veterans Day is a chance to show our appreciation for all those who have fought for, and defended our freedom.  I hope Nebraskans will again join with me to show our gratitude to our nation’s heroes.
