Urgent Need for Blood Donors Arises During National Blood Donor Month

While Governor Dave Heineman has joined other governors from across the nation in proclaiming January as National Blood Donor Month, the Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) has issued an urgent appeal for blood donors. All blood types are needed; especially O (positive and negative), A (positive) and B (positive).
Simply, blood transfusion orders are exceeding donations. Holiday schedules and nice weather are two reasons people may have put off donating. However, the need for blood has not taken a holiday and blood donors are urgently needed. Currently, the community’s blood supply is at less than 50 percent of normal.
"Blood donors give, not only blood, but hope to critically ill patients. They are behind the scenes making miracles happen,” noted Phyllis Ericson, CEO. Patients received blood daily, often as a result of cancer treatments, surgery or a trauma.
To be a blood donor you must be at least 17 years of age, weigh 115 pounds or more, be in general good health and provide a photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport. To make an appointment or to learn more, visit http://www.ncbb.org/ or call 877-486-9414.
