Letter to the Editor

I would like to take this opportunity to share my thoughts on Sheriff Troy Schmitz quest for election. Since becoming Webster County Sheriff, Troy has displayed a tireless commitment to the duties of his office and the citizens of Webster County. I have witnessed Sheriff Schmitz's consistent and progressive efforts to update the department. A task which, in my opinion, he has made great strides. His personality is pervaded by his high ideals and standards and a sense of fairness to those he serves. He has maintained great visibility and involvement throughout the county. Sheriff Schmitz has never wavered from his persistent willingness to duty and his dedication to service. I would like to thank all those who are called to public office, and encourage all registered voters to cast their ballots on May 11th. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Sheriff Troy Schmitz for his dedication and professionalism. Respectfully, Dayre M Williams Red Cloud, Nebraska

"It is the duty of the sheriff to serve, execute and return writs or other legal process issued by a lawful authority. The sheriff shall prepare and file an annual inventory statement of county personal property in his or her custody. The sheriff has charge and custody of the jail and its prisoners, except in counties where a county board of corrections exists and has duties over the jail. It is the duty of the sheriff to keep the peace, apprehend criminals and perform other duties as peace officer. The sheriff may appoint deputies but such deputies may not be the county treasurer, clerk, register of deeds or surveyor.

Sheriff
Troy Schmitz

The above information is taken from the Webster Co. Website.
I wish the Sheriff also believed that part of his duty is to look out for elderly or vulnerable persons who go missing. Sheriffs in other counties have listed that as one of their responsibilities on their counties web sites. Even now, with 20/20 hindsite it isn't listed as one of the duties of the Webster Co Sheriff.

The Webster Co. Web site does not list deputies as do web sites from other counties. Do you think that Sheriff Schmitz is as open or transparent as he could/should be? He doesn't seem to work well with news media or even other government agencies.

Maybe it is time for change.

We have just this one chance and then we have no choice for at least the next four years. Do we care?

"Behold the turtle. He only makes progress when he sticks his neck out.” It is time to STAND for TRUTH and RIGHTEOUSNESS! We ALL need to stand up and "STICK OUR NECKS OUT" for those VALUES in which We Believe!

IT IS TIME TO “OPEN OUR MOUTHS for GOOD, STAND for FREEDOM and protect our CONSTITUTION! Maybe, like the Turtle, this is as fast as we can be for right now BUT, ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING WHEN IT COMES TO OUR GOD GIVEN RIGHTS IN THIS “PROMISED LAND” OF AMERICA!

Silence isn’t always GOLDEN . . . it’s YELLOW!

YES, we must be PEACEFUL AND LOVING TO ALL BUT, WE WILL BE BLESSED FOR TAKING A STAND IN PROTECTING OUR FAMILIES AND RIGHTS GIVEN TO US FROM GOD ABOVE! “WE THE PEOPLE” MUST BE “OF ONE HEART” AND WITH LOVE, WE WILL “TURN THIS WORLD AROUND!”

Remember this on election day. The most common way people give up their power is by thinking that they don't have any.

You can vote to approve the way things have been handled by the sherrif in Webster County or you can vote for CHANGE!

May 27th 2007 The Lincoln Sheriff's Posse found what police believed to be the baseball bat was used in a tragic double homicide that happened on May 17, 2007.

If Webster Co Sherrif had worked with the people of Blue Hill/Webster Co. Do you suppose Sidney Troxel might have been found sooner?

The bat was found on after 16 Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Posse volunteers worked their way along Interstate-80.
Volunteers began searching eastbound from Hershey on horseback and westbound from North Platte. A LCSO Posse volunteer discovered the bat in about a foot of weeds by the roadway. The bat was sent to the crime lab to be tested for fingerprints and DNA evidence.
Police believed that the bat was thrown from the vehicle as the pair of suspects fled the state on the night of the crime.
State highway workers had been alerted to keep on the lookout for a baseball bat but had not located it. One official said it was like "looking for a needle in a haystack." Then Lincoln County Sheriff's Posse was called in to assist in the hunt.
Webster Co. Sherrif Troy Schmitz said in a news report, after Troxel was found , that a search for him would have been like "looking for a needle in a haystack." He said, "I don't know what more we could have done."
On horseback, members of the Lincoln Co. posse rode west and east from Hershey to North Platte to search every inch of the roadway. After searching only a couple of hours, the aluminum baseball bat was located.

An organized search in Blue Hill "might" have found the object of the search after searching only a couple of hours. We will never know.

A sherrif who works well with the community he is serving and can call on volunteers when the need is there would be a great asset to our community just as it is to the residents of Lincoln Co.

Although I feel that Dayre is a person of great character, I feel that former sheriff Jim Disney worked more closely with both men and may have a better professional opinion of their abilities to lead as sheriff. Dayre may know Troy on a personal level, and I respect his opinion but Jim was our elected sheriff for many years and he knows what it will take for the new sheriff to be successful. Had it not been for Jim’s health he would no doubt be the sheriff for another 4 years.
This is an important time and I hope that all that cast their vote will think of the job that needs done and vote for the right candidate. Clyde is the right person for the job. He will have to do a good job to get reelected in 2014. Troy will change nothing but will have the office for the next 20 if elected. That is just the way it works. So vote for Clyde and vote for an new system and new ideas.
