Editorial Comment
By Sylvia Alber
I recently read a “joke” on line. It read like this…
A man was sitting in a town meeting, heckling the mayor as he delivered a long speech. Finally the mayor could stand it no longer, so he pointed to the man and said “will that gentleman please stand up and tell the audience what he has ever done for the good of the city.”“Well, Mr. Mayor,” the man said in a firm voice. “I voted against you in the last election.”
In Blue Hill, while no one can brag about having voted against the Mayor in the last election, no one will have to admit to voting for her for mayor. Or most of the rest of the council. As we should all know the mayor was not elected to the position of Mayor by a vote of the people. The position was granted by default after the resignation of the previous elected Mayor when he was forced to decline the position because of his failing health. When a Mayor in Blue Hill is unable to fulfill that position and is replaced during the term that position falls to the president of the city council so I guess we can say that the members of the city council put the present Mayor in that position by making her the president of the council.
In the last election, unlike the one just previous to it, there was a full slate of candidates, four candidates to be elected for two city council positions. Elected to the positions were incumbents, Keri Schunk, and John Schwab. They defeated candidates Ed Wademan and Tim Eiseman, who each received a significant number of votes during the election. So if an opening should occur during the term lots of thinking people would have thought one of these two individuals would have been a logical choice for that position as they were voted for by a number of people. Or even the additional two individuals who had put their names on the ballot in the primary election, Mike Hall or Jerry Hamik. But not, so according to Mayor Schunk. Now with the Mayor moved from her position on the city council to the position of Mayor there is a vacancy on the council, so an appointment must be made to fill that position. After a long and drawn out process finally a nomination is made by the Mayor, not nominated are the individuals who had expressed a willingness to serve in that position and had been voted for by many people, no election this time, the public did not vote, the council approved the nomination by a vote of 2 to 2, and with the Mayor casting the deciding vote another city council member was on board. A council member not elected by the public but put on the board by the mayor, hand selected. This council member is “elected” with three votes, the mayor and two council members.
Then after a lot of name calling and lies are spread around a council member who was elected in a legitimate election, honestly elected, even though he was elected with five write in votes because there was no one willing to step forward to take the position, is recalled after stating in a public forum that he was through and had enough of the ridiculous process being called city government in Blue Hill .
Again it falls to the Mayor to appoint someone to fill the open position. Again the Mayor does not discuss her selection with the council she advertises in numerous forums for a candidate for the position. She does not reveal the names or qualifications of those candidates who agreed to be considered for the position, even to members of the city council and with no fan fair whatsoever she announces her selection at the city council meeting saying, “ I nominate Albert Grey”. No introductions necessary, I guess. She does not state his qualification or any reason for her selection. She does not express any confidence in his ability to serve. So with five votes Albert Grey is on the council. Hand picked by the mayor.
Later she is quoted in the Hastings Tribune "....I think there were some people that had a conflict of interest who wouldn't have worked, but they were all very qualified and would've worked fine." ???? they would have worked or they wouldn't have worked, which is it?.
So let’s summarize, No one voted for Keri Schunk for Mayor, four council members voted for her for president of the city council, a position that she no longer holds. Mark Petska, who was appointed by Mayor Russ Willems to fill an open position on the council because no one would run for the position. He was put into place by a 2 to 2 vote with the tie broken by the mayor. Doris Hartman was put in place with a 2 to 2 vote after having been nominated by the Mayor, with the tie broken by the Mayor Keri Schunk. And finally the newest position was filled by Albert Grey who was not elected by the people but appointed and that appointment approved by the city council.
We have two members of city government who received more than five votes to be in the position they hold. So we have only two honestly elected members of city government, Jesse Alber and John Schwab. What does that say about the people of Blue Hill?
Several years ago I attended a city meeting when Mark McFarland was mayor, there was an open position on the council to be filled. He discussed all the candidates and their qualifications with the council, he did not make the decision all by himself but involved all the elected officials in the decision. I guess Mayor Schunk has enough insight she doesn’t need any input from the rest of the council but I was more comfortable with Mayor McFarlands methods.
So where do we go from here.? I am looking forward to the next election.

She followed the law
why will you be worried about the next election? You commented "what does this say about the people of Blue Hill?" Obviously you do not care for the citizen's of this community so PLEASE move! Also maybe all of the appointments would not have been needed for the city council if your son's were not on there stirring up trouble. Oh wait I forgot your son's won by such a huge land slide, or maybe no one else ran and 1 was a write in with how many votes? I promise this was a mistake the community has learned from and will never let happen again!
Seems the citizens don't care much for themselves .....they don't turn out for an election or step forward to serve the community when the opportunity presents itself. As for a "mistake" they've learned from that remains to be seen. Huge landside or not they made a commitment to the community have you?
I said " I look forward to the next election." I did not say I was going to be worried about the next election. Where did that come from?
What position are you in that you can promise "this was a mistake the community has learned from and will never let happen again?"
Only the future can tell us if citizens of Blue Hill have learned the importance of serving the community.
To me, the method that Mayor McFarland utilized in filling a vacant council seat makes a lot more snese than that used by Mayor Schunk. To this day, I still do not understand why she felt the need for all the secrecy in her decision making process. As I have stated before, the walkout from a previous council meeting and my vote against the nomination of Councilwoman Hartman were directed against the Mayor's actions and not against Councilwoman Hartman.
I bet part of the reason it was not brought up with the council is because it would just start a big argument & if someone didn't agree with Jesse he may call them duragatory names. Sylvia, about the people that got votes in the last election-I would say if you get 50 or less votes out of hundreds, I'm guessing that is the towns way of saying they don't want you on the council. I think Keri & John got around 200. I respect the Albers & you are good people, but you put to much effort into negative things.
The results of the election held November 11, 2008 were
Keri Schunk 252 votes, John Schwab 225 votes Edward Wademan 118 votes and Tim Eiseman 114. That means there was a total of 709 votes cast. Each person cast two votes so about 352 people voted. Which only means that over 200 voters thought that the experienced incumbents might be a better choice than people with no city council experience. About a third of the voters thought e "newbies" could do a better job. It certainly didn't mean that the voters were saying they didn't want these qualified people on the council at any time. Over 100 voters voted for each of these candidates, I like that better than 4 or 5.
And as for the Albers being good people, I couldn't agree with you more, there is an Alber who has donated more than four gallon of blood to the Red Cross, An Alber gives many hours of volunteer referee each year, two others who have donated many hours to the local volunteer fire department, There was an Alber watching the grocery store fire for nearly 24 hours straight without sleep, protecting the town of Blue Hill, an Alber has started, nearly single handedly, a youth football program in Blue Hill. There is an Alber who is a trained EMT able to serve if needed. An Alber serves on the county fair board. It was Albers who started the local chapter of Pheasants Forever and contributed many hours to the recent very successful Youth mentor hunt. An Alber is a veteran who protected this country by going to war in Iraq. When an individual shot his face off on main street of Blue Hill it was an Alber, out of all the people there at the time, that responded and got this individual to help. It was an Alber who organized the successful effort to see that a mentally unstable individual did not recieve an automatic renew of their liquor license. An Alber put in many hours talking to state Department of Family services to get help for individuals and the city of Blue Hill when Belle Amis was a problem. And when no one else would "step up" and take the job they served on the city council, doing a job no one else wanted. They made a commitment and I believe they have made a positive difference.
I am proud of all these Albers and all they have done for the community.
I resent your assumption that Jesse would call anyone, in a public meeting a "duragatory name", you obviously haven't been at many of the city council meetings and have nothing to base that "bet" on, I wish I could take you up on it, that is something I would most certainly be willing to bet on. I wouldn't be very proud of anyone who wouldn't stand by their conviction so I would hope that he would "lobby" for what he thougt was right.
I think it is true the Albers put a lot of effort into everything they believe in strongly, I guess we don't believe it is "negative" .
Where do you put your efforts?
